Fire Island Hosta - Judy Niemeyer

As promised, here is my post of the Fire Island Hosta quilt that a customer of mine entered into the quilt competition at The Calagry Stampede and won third place.  Congratulations!!!  It's a gorgeous quilt, a piece of art really.

The pattern is called Fire Island Hosta by Judy Niemeyer and can be found here at Quiltworx.  Judy's patterns are quite unique and are recognizable anywhere.

When my customer brought me the quilt I was in awe.  It's beautiful and she has done an amazing job picking fabrics and colours.  She always does actually.  She has never brought me a quilt that I have not loved.

There is such contrast of points and curves that really makes this pattern pop.

We have reflected the points and curves in the quilting to complement the various pieces.

My customer found a digital quilting pattern for this particular quilt on line.  So I used the feather patterns which she loved and then created my own patterns for the rest of the quilt.  We decided on straight pointy lines which turned out beautifully.

The threads we chose for the top matched the fabrics perfectly.  We used some Konfetti which are solid colours and Tutti threads which are veriegated all from Wonderfil.  Then on the back we decided on a lighter thread as the quilting is so dense - we went with Invisafil.

I just love these curly feathers.

I had a lot of fun designing the pointy line patterns.  Once I did it for one of the leaves I digitized the patterns I had created and then had the computer sew out the rest of them for me.  Of course I still had to make sure that the patterns fit into each piece just right.

Here is a shot of the back and the front.

I love the backs of the quilts just as much as the fronts.  Look at the definition.  The feathers in the corners are stunning.  And here you get a good look at the quilting in the border as well.

Here's a shot of it in it's entirety.
